Starfall

23 Dec

We began exploring Starfall.com, a free website to teach children to read with phonics, about a week ago.  It was the first in the list of online resources under Reading and Phonics category at  The Teacher Mama Chronicles, a homeschool mom’s blog. I have been visiting various homeschool blogs for a while now.

My daughter doesn’t know how to use a mouse or track pad yet.  At first, I just let her watch.  But then she started having favorite sections and asking for them every time.  That’s when I began guiding her on how to use the Macbook’s track pad.  Seeing how impatient and frustrated she got, I wasn’t really expecting her to learn soon.  But alas, yesterday, she did.  I’m so proud!

There are four sections at Starfall.  The first, ABCs, “teaches letter-sound relationships by providing a kid-friendly navigation system that explicitly focuses on each letter of the alphabet.”  The other sections are Learn to Read, It’s Fun to Read, and I’m Reading.

Those sections are under the Classic Starfall.  Then there’s More Starfall which has the content from Starfall.com plus K-2 Math,a Talking Library, and songs, rhymes and phonics for all ages.  This is a membership site.  The Home Membership ($35) allows “one account for use by member’s immediate family. Maximum 3 computers.  Not valid for schools, businesses, or other organizations. 365 days.”  The other types of memberships are Teacher ($70), Classroom ($150), and School ($270).
